'Summer school, by choice, at St. Luke's'
August 24, 2006
For the second consecutive year, students from Fairfield and Westchester counties have taken advantage of summer learning experiences presented by faculty and varsity coaches at St. Luke's School.
Summer at St. Luke's included academic offerings such as creative writing and algebra I and II; enrichment opportunities such as SAT/PSAT prep; study skills techniques; theatre workshops, and basketball and lacrosse athletic camps.
Mark Chuhta, director of Summer at St. Luke's, reported, "Summer at St. Luke's has been a great success this year and we are looking forward to expanding the course offerings for summer 2007 with St. Luke's talented pool of faculty and coaches.
Additionally, the Waterside School and St. Luke's School partnered to offer a summer opportunity to the Waterside students beginning this summer.
Located on the St. Luke's campus on North Wilton Road, the Waterside "campers" arrived each morning from Stamford and participated in a variety of activities. Mornings began witha focus on academmics, including reading, writing, and arithmetic, with an introduction to computers. Afternoons were filled with art classes, theatre arts, and athletic activities.
Teachers from Waterside worked along side student volunteer counselors from St. Luke's School, Brunswick School, Greenwich Academy and Greenwich and Darien high schools, assisting and supervising up to 70 campers from kindergarten through fifth grade. The ideal ratio is one counselor to every five campers.
Student volunteers from New Canaan included St. Luke's School students Dylan Herbert, Emmy and Lila Goettler, Michelle Petrucci, Amanda Ackerman, Kevin Holloway, and Jake Mozdean, and Convent of the Sacred Heart student Caroline Kitchener.
Other volunteers from St. Luke's included Alex Polyakov and Sophie Cox of Norwalk; Aggie Kelly, Carla Nicasio and Jon Salamon of Rowayton; Alesha Davis of Stamford; Charlotte Lyons and Tripp Lyons of Darien; Ted Benson of Redding; Amy Samenuk and Malcolm Burnley of Ridgefield; Andrew Jacoby and Brendon DeMond of Wilton.
