As it was last year, the race was held in honor of one of Waterside’s beloved supporters and an Associate Board member: Jeffrey Hammond Long. Jeff was the finest of young men; a devoted son; a loving husband; the truest of friends; and a force behind the creation of the event itself. Over a thousand people ran, walked, and cheered as they echoed proudly Jeff’s deep commitment to the cause.

Driven by and believing in the School’s mission to provide opportunities for children regardless of income or circumstance, corporate and individual sponsors gave generously to support the event. Garden Catering donated bagels and bananas; Nestlé Waters and Pepsico donated water for runners and all those in attendance; and, ensuring the financial success of the day, over forty corporate and family sponsors supported the cause generously. Adding to the spirit of the day, scores of Waterside alumni were joined by students from many of Waterside’s destinations schools – Brunswick, Greenwich Academy, Greenwich Country Day, Rye Country Day, Sacred Heart, St. Luke’s et al. – to participate happily and celebrate proudly.

The Run For Waterside raised over $400,000 in support of the Jeffrey Hammond Long Scholarship Fund, ensuring that Jeff’s example and spirit will be shared with the children of Waterside forever. Beyond the throng of supporters, it was the love and memories shared that best defined the day’s meaning and success. While the day was understandably bittersweet, the event reflected the joy, kindness and sheer goodness that were the hallmarks of a life lived fully, generously and well. The Run served as a fitting tribute to the absolute finest of souls, reminding all a part of the day of Jeff’s belief that, indeed,
“It’s Cool to be Nice.”
