Saturday, October 23 marked Waterside’s favorite fall tradition: the tenth annual Run For Waterside. For the third year in a row, the race was held in honor of one of Waterside’s beloved associate board members Jeffrey Long. Jeff was the finest of young men; a devoted son; a loving husband; the truest of friends; and a force behind the creation of the event itself. After a smaller run last year due to Covid, Saturday’s 5K served as a homecoming for alumni, families, and friends of the School. More than 1,000 people – many of whom learned of Waterside School through Jeff and his wife Kaylie’s deep commitment to the cause- ran, walked or cheered, proving that even after a year apart, our community is stronger than ever.
Driven by the school’s mission to provide opportunities for children regardless of circumstance, corporate and local sponsors gave generously to support the event. Additionally, students from many of Waterside’s destination schools, including Brunswick, Greenwich Academy, Greenwich Country Day, Sacred Heart, as well as numerous Waterside alumni participated happily and proudly, both at Waterside and virtually from wherever they were.
The Run For Waterside raised over $260,000 to support the Jeffrey Hammond Long Scholarship Fund, ensuring that Jeff’s example and spirit will be shared with the children of Waterside forever. The day was bittersweet for many, but the event reflected the joy, kindness and sheer goodness that defined a life fully and generously lived. The Run served as a fitting tribute to the absolute finest of souls, and reminded us all of Jeff’s lifelong motto: “It’s Cool to be Nice.”
