Waterside Class of 2007

Mike Bazelais ’07

University of Hartford

  • Michael Bazelais ’07 began his Waterside journey in September 2001 as a member of the School’s inaugural kindergarten class. During his formative years – spent in a make-shift trailer and a church basement – Mike was immersed in a rigorous program of study that blended hard work with pride, and self-discipline with discovery.

Now a graduate of the University of Hartford, Mike has come full circle by returning to Waterside in 2021 as an art teacher and Assistant Director of Alumni Support. This fall, Mike introduced students to contemporary artist Jean-Michel Basquiat by inviting them to create projects inspired by his unique style, as part of an installation currently on display. Mike also plays an instrumental role in supporting our 5th graders through small group and individual meetings as they transition to middle school. He has established a mentoring program that pairs Waterside alumni entering 6th grade with Waterside alumni currently in 8th grade at their next independent schools. Both in and out of the classroom, Mike shares his passion for art and dedication to helping others while gaining invaluable leadership experience.

With tuition support from Waterside, Mike is pursuing a part-time Master’s in Social Work at Fordham University and plans to become a licensed social worker. He also aspires to exhibit his art in a gallery or museum and collaborate with contemporary artists. Mike’s journey from Waterside kindergartener to successful graduate, teacher, and role model is a testament to the school’s transformative power. He remains deeply committed to mentoring Waterside students and alumni, inspiring them to achieve their dreams.
